How Interior Design Impacts Workflow
Post Date: 2017-05-21
As previous research has shown, the way a workspace is designed has been found to improve businesses in more ways than one. Essentially, the environment one surrounds themselves in can play a key part in workflow productivity. Designing work spaces effectively can thus influence everything from improving task performance to increasing employee satisfaction. Below are several interior design elements that have been proven to have a positive influence in workflow productivity:
Inspire Collaboration with Rounded Structures
When it comes to investing in furniture, things like price, style, and colour are usually taken into account before a purchase is made. Another aspect that should also be taken into consideration in office design, however, is the shape of the furniture.
Based on past research, having circular furniture in the office is positively correlated to increased employee creativity and collaboration as those seated in a circular formation were more likely to engage in collective thinking than those who were seated in a rectangular arrangement.
Increase Task Performance with Colour
Just as colour-based marketing and advertising, research has also shown that colour can play a role in employee performance. With the ability to influence action, colour choice can affect task performance and how well employees are able to complete their tasks.
For example, exposure to shades of blue and green enhance the ability to generate ideas, while hues of red entice attention to detail. Thus, cmpanies like Google, Microsoft and eBay incorporate these shades not only in their branding, but also in their office spaces.
Increase Accuracy with Temperature
The temperature of the working space has been found to play a prominent role in influencing accurate task execution. The key to improve the workspace environment is to find the perfect temperature for your office, which is usually between 20º to 24º celcius.
Past reports have shown that maintaining an optimum temperature in the workplace drastically decreased typing errors amongst employees and increased output work. Ultimately, though, it’s best to have options for employees; so it is wise to also have portable desk fans or cold drinks available for staff members who prefer working in colder conditions.
Attract Quality Employees with Décor
Generally, most offices opt for a minimalist design: Clean lines, sleekness, functionality over décor. Some companies have taken the movement too literally, however, resulting in a dull workspace that leaves employees dissatisfied.
Studies have shown that employees who work in well-decorated spaces reported higher levels of positive personality attributes such motivation, task dedication and future plans to continue on with the company compared to employees who worked in offices that lacked an attractive design environment. The key to office décor is maintaining colour cohesion and of course, moderation — the last thing companies would want to create is a cluttered and unorganised environment for their staff.
